Rupert Westenthaler is working as researcher and senior software developer in the Knowledge and Media Technologies (KMT) Group at Salzburg Research. He holds a DI(fh) in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of applied Science in Salzburg (June 2000) and has ten years of experience in near-to-market IT research. As a member of the technical team of Salzburg Research, he has been actively conducting research and software development in the area of Semantic Web, knowledge management and ontology engineering.

His track record includes CULTOS (European research project) - design and development of knowledge based multimedia authoring tools, METOKIS (European research project) - design and development of a middleware for knowledge sharing, DYNAMONT (National research project) – definition of a methodology for dynamic ontology creation and LIVE (European integrated research project) – design and development of a knowledge enhanced production support system for the multi stream staging of live TV events. Current work includes: IKS (European integrated research project) – definition of an „Interactive Knowledge Stack“ and implementation of the stack as an open source technology platform for semantically enhanced content management systems; He is also an active member and committer of Apache Stanbol (incubating) project.
