Launching IKS Semantic Editor Development Group

At last week's IKS Early adopters workshop in Salzburg, Austria, Henri Bergius from Nemein, a partner in the IKS project along with Gentics kicked-off the IKS Semantic Editor development group. The idea behind the rich semantic editor is to provide user-friendly interaction with semantically enriched content. CMSs’ need better WYSIWYG editors than the current common tools available.

In order to further this goal IKS is looking to develop a new Rich Text Editor with semantic capabilities, such as provide semantically capable editor as a drop-in replacement to common tools like TinyMCE and FCKEditor, that is small, fast javascript core editor that CMS vendors can integrate with the semantic capabilities of their systems, and where the action "Insert person" is as simple as inserting an image or making text bold.

The Aloha Editor Framework

IKS will not be starting from scratch. Gentics has offered to bring their innovative rich editor project Aloha to IKS for more semantic enhancements and features. The Aloha Editor provides a new way to edit content, and was designed and developed by Gentics Software GmbH beginning in 2010, and was first presented in public at the UXCE10 by Laurin Herlt and Haymo Meran. The idea: Edit content without forms, iframes or a backend. Edit it right in place. It can be the framework and technology of choice to implement semantic content editing use cases.

Get Involved! @ first semantic editor Hackathon

The first semantic editor Hackathon will take place next month at Nemein in Helsinki, Finland. The goals of the meeting are to get to know the Aloha codebase, integrate Aloha into your CMS, and create the first IKS semantic plugins for Aloha, probably starting with the Google-supported People RDFa ontology to work the SEO angle...with a focus slightly depending on who will be participating.

Date: July 26-27, 2010

Location: Nemein office on Hietalahdenkatu 8 a 22, Helsinki (map)

If you would like to join then please send a short email to Henri Bergius. For more information about the Semantic Editor Hackathon see the wiki page: http://wiki.iks-project.eu/index.php/Semantic_Editor
